Local P2P Messaging?

We are wanting to upgrade our Office 97 products (about
time, huh! :) but I'm told that the newer versions of
Outlook do not offer Instant Messaging over our LAN; that
is, without utilizing the Internet.

We have come to rely on our localized instant messaging
capabilities, especially when our internet-based email is
down. Assuming my information is correct, is it possible
to retain our older version of Outlook while using the
other programs in Office 2003? Or, is there an alternate
solution?

Our LAN is a "diversified" group of Win 98SE, Win 2K, and
Win XP machines.

Thanks for all input!

You could always run an IRC server (free) on a Windows machine anywhere on
your network (a machine that wont get turned off, like your mail server or
something). You can then use a free client such as Trillian
(www.trillian.cc) which will provide popup IMing just like MSN. Trillian
also incorperates all the other chat clients into one, so for those of you
who do have 'net access, you can IM to anything on any platform.
