Local LAN security glitch

Hi all. Since reloading Windows XP (SP2), my two WIN2K clients are having
big problems accessing shared folders and printers, etc.

The config I have is WinXP Home acting as server for a Cable connection. It
has a USB connection to the cable modem and an ethernet to a 12-port hub
which also connects to the WIN2K clients. I am using standard WINXP ICS,
which works just fine. I can see shared drives on the client PCs, but even
when I log in on a client with the same user/pw as the XP machine, I cannot
see any shared resources - it just refuses the connection.

I cannot find anywhere in XP Home where I can customise security policies or
otherwise allow more access like I would have in WIN2K. I have tried
disabling XP Firewall, but this makes no difference.

Any other suggestions (keep it clean) or places to look would be most
welcome.

It seems maybe this is a really tough one, even for the MVPs??? Here is some
more information about things I have tried, in case it helps someone
understand the issue a bit better.

The error message I get reads "XXX is not accessible. Logon failure: the
user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." If I
use 'net view' from the DOS prompt it comes back "Error 5 has occurred".

I have tried everything I can think of and then some more. Disabled the XP
firewall, checked and double-checked all the settings, added and removed
NetBeui and NetBios over TCP/IP, even tried 'netsh firewall' command line to
try to enable filesharing but I think this only affects the XP firewall
anyway. Also opened ports 135-139 and 445 on the local LAN, but nothing
seems to work.

Last night, for a minute or two, I got a username/pw request back, but none
of my u/p combinations would allow me to log in, including admin which is
the same on all three computers.

So I really am at a loss to know what is going on. As I said, the other two
can exchange freely, and I can exchange with both, but neither can access my
shared resources. I am fairly tech literate, so fire away if you have
anything you want me to try out. PLEASE?

If you don't have any other suggestions, can you explain to me how to
disable the stupid Win XP SP2 security screens so I can see share
permissions and security profiles the way I used to in Win2K and Win NT?

hAVE YOU been able to PING from each computer to each other computer?

Yes. All computers can ping each other. The two 2K machines can access each
other's shares and the XP machine can access the shares on both. All
machines share the ICS internet connection. Someone on another list
suggested I modify the Local Security Policy, which makes sense, but that
facility seems to be missing in XP Home SP2. At least, I cannot find it.

Hi Rick

I have created new shares using a program called NetClickLE, which allows me
to directly modify NTFS user permissions. I am now seeing (from Win2K) an
"Enter Network Password" screen which asks for a user/pw, but nothing I try
in there works. Similarly, on login now the 2K machine is trying to mount
previous mapped drives on the XP machine, but says the password is not
correct. Any thoughts where I might be able to go to from here?
