Local HTML files won't open

Recently, my computer stopped opening any HTML file I have
on my hard drive. I've tried IE, Netscape, Opera... none
can open an HTML file, no matter where it is on my HD. The
application simply freezes instead (and annoyingly, won't
be shut down by anything less than a complete restart). Any
help anyone could offer would be most appreciated.

Open Explorer and go under the Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types and
check what application is associated with HTM (.htm) and HTML (.html) files.
Click on the Advanced button and look under the Open action to see what
application is configured to open .htm and .html filetypes.

For my HTM and HTML filetype associations, the Open action has the
following:

Program = "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1
"Use DDE" is checked (i.e., enabled).
DDE message = "%1",,-1,0,,,,
application = IExplore
DDE app not running = *
topic = WWW_OpenURLNewWindow

Maybe some other application is listed for the Open action. If so, you
might be able to just click on the Change button to select IE and maybe
it'll fill in the rest of those fields for you.
 
Ben,

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web Settings"
This should fix up the file association for you.
