Old Timer

This is now the third time I have encounter3ed this--the other two times I
simply uninstalled all the upgrades and have been running without them.

Here's my issue:

I have a Sony PCG-FXA63 laptop
40 GB Drive
AMD Athalon Processor
512 MB Memory
Netgear Wireless Network
PCMacLan Running
McAfee, Sygate, AdSubtract, Spybot

I have updated to the latest XP fixes. Here's what happens when I do:

1. They install fine
2. Computer runs without issue except
3. When I right-click desktop icons & folders, the system hangs. I have left
it hanging for up to an hour, but no action, simply the hourglass.
4. One time I went to Windows Support and they were clueless.
5. It goes away when I go back to a setpoint before the upgrades.

Can anyone help? Is this a known bug? What is going on?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Old Timer, I'll offer what I know from my experience: I've been working on an XP Pro install for almost a week. My situation was different in that Windows updates, in most cases, wouldn't even download. When they did (ex. IE UPdate) then the system would be unstable. (IE would have errors and close.) So the specific symptoms aren't the same, however, the conclusion is. Windows XP Pro doesn't like the Windows updates (at all!). My solution, out of frustration, was to install Windows XP Home - I did the full install (don't know if this is pratical for you). Anyway, once installed, SP1 installed, no issue, and all Windows updates (I think 17 critical and 21 non critical) installed without issue. (I installed non critical updates first, because some of the critical updates were for the non critical items). Anyway, I now have a stable system. No issues, no hangs, no quirkiness, installed Office XP Pro, tested every program I could think of, and it all works, and all security patches are installed. (I had tried everything with Windows XP Pro, chat room & msdn solutions, new full clean installs, I even bought a new hard drive and installed it on that, nothing seemed to work).
