load needed DLLs for kernel

I was in the process of installing XP SP 2 and after
restarting the system as prompted the PC won't restart.
Instead I get the message "load needed DLLs for kernel"
and contact your support person or something to that
effect.

I've checked the link and found a message indicating I
should try sfc.exe. The only way I can even get a
command prompt is to use my XP upgrade disk to start the
repair mode. When I find sfc.exe it is in the
c:\windows\system32 directory and when I type
sfc /scannow I get the message "The command is not
recognized Type HELP for a list of supported commands"

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
