Yet Update and Defender say all definitions are current, nothing to
download.

So I have a RED Balloon I cant get rid of...

Huh?

And now, 10 minutes later OneCare goes GREEN so apparently all ok.

I have a 9yo PC (well the motherboard and most stuff inside is! - obviously
a new-ish video card and over 2gb RAM help, but it's so old it has PCI
slots, not PCI Express, and USB 1 !!! - gotta get THAT fixed!)) and I have
had no trouble with Vista Home Premium at all. Cant believe, really, how
good, stable and quick it is...

Rgds

If you are running the BETA version of OneCare Live, its probably expired
and thats why you are not getting any updates, if you are in the perpetual
beta, you will continue to get new defintions. Windows Defender deals with
AntiSpyware, which is difference from OneCare which is the AV program.Try
opening the program and click the appropriate link for updating the program
if you are running the final release.

NOT a beta copy Andre, went out and sprung AUD$90 for a released version of
it...

Tks for response though!

Old is good! I stuck vista Home Premium on a 5yo Packard Bell, CPU 2.0Ghz;
shoved in 128mbs ATI card, and 1 Gig of Ram. Runs like a dream. I have it
networked with a XP computer that has the printer. File sharing, printing,
etc; no worries. I don't know what people on here, at this forum, do with
their NEW computers; must jump on them a few times to turn them on!

Just curious Rod; what is your CPU, and what is your fsb speed. My old
Packard Bell with the CPU 2.0Ghz, that is the only thing holding mine back;
it has a rating of 3.0 for the CPU, whereas overall I would have had have 4.6
with the old Packard Bell setup.
Good to see another Aussie on here. These Yanks should stop treating their
computers like motorbikes; they must be jumping on them, and kick-starting
them to have the probs that they do!

Gday mate! I have a celeron 2.8ghz running 2.75gb ram....what the heck is
an fsb speed?

I have a friend that was very happy with Windows Live Onecare and she
had 38 days remaining on the trial. I told her to wait buying it but
she was scared she would forget even so I told her that there was no
chance Microsoft Billy would let her forget. So I helped her buy it
directly from Microsoft and everything went well.

Today she had an urgent phone call for me and when I did not answer
fast enough she ran down the hall and was knocking on my door. (We
live in the same building) The Onecare icon was red and there was
another red shield saying there was a problem. It turns out that
there was an update for the virus definition but for some reason it
would not download. I told her the problem is with Microsoft and that
to just give it some time and the problem may go away all by itself. I
also told her that her system was still fully protected except for the
latest viruses in the new update.

You can't tell her nothing! :-( She does not like little RED icons
and wants instant action. Message to Microsoft Billy - create some
warning icons in a soothing blue and stop scaring the Little Old
Ladies!!!!

a/v update problems are a real pain. First thing to verify is that the date and
time of the PC are set correctly. Then, if it is and the update still won't
happen, it may be worthwhile to reinstall and activate with the LiveID she
originally subscribed with.

Hi Rod, i'm over on the GC; I lived over in Perth in the 70's, great place!
not to mention the Quoka Arms on Rotto!
The system bus speed; the rate that data travels around your motherboard

Mick on Gold coast

Stephen, I noticed that with Vista's windows update. I had a flat CMOS
battery; twigged to when I couldn't get updates, and then saw that the date
and time was wrong.

The date was just fine, the problem was not at her end. A day later I
was at her machine, the icon was still red and I clicked, check for
update, and as I was talking to her the icon went to green. Wow, she
was very impressed with what I did. There was a tuneup scheduled in a
couple of days so I decided to run the tuneup and get that out of the
way. Funny thing after doing the tuneup it did not change the date
for the next scheduled tuneup.

Yesterday, which also happened to be the scheduled tuneup day, her
Onecare icon went amber... I clicked on the icon and it tells me the
system is fair but it does not tell me why. I click on the help
button and get to a website where I click on the subscriber button
which gets me to a website that tells me it is not ready yet! I am
not impressed. I told her it is not giving her any problems and to
just give it some time and maybe it will correct itself.

I told her to get Onecare because the trial was operating quietly in
the background without disturbing anyone. It seems very odd that now
that she is a subscriber that she wants to get rid of it, "How much
longer will I have to look at this orange Button, this is sick."

One thing that would help very easily is that if Onecare has a problem
and you click on it's icon, that it clearly spell out the problem,
i.e. software update needed, definitionions update needed, backup
should be done, hard drive should be defragged... and how to correct
the problem.

The easiest solution is to roll out a software update with an option
so that you can delete this useless icon from the taskbar.

There are two things that concern me with your friend's system. When OneCare
turns yellow or red, it should most definitely advise you why it is not green
and spell out what action you need to take. Why it isn't displaying is a
concern.
Second, clicking help brought you to a page that doesn't sound like a Help page.
This is still trial software, yes? She can get email support. Submitting a log
to be reviewed would be worthwhile. How to reach support -

p.s. You might want to take further discussion to the forums at the link above
rather than here in the Vista newsgroup.

No, when Microsoft takes the money it is not trial software! I did
get e-mail from her this morning telling me the Onecare icon is green
again but asking why it took so long. It really does not matter as it
was not affecting her system in anyway but she does not like the
red/amber icon and expects instant action.

I took a quick look at the link you provided, looks like it is for the
trial product. I guess she should have waited until the trail period
expired.

I still vote to give the option to get rid of the icon and stop
bothering the owner with useless information. The anti-virus and
anti-spam program should never bother the owner and the backup and
defrag should be totally optional and can be done manually. If
Onecare has a problem that needs attention it should e-mail Microsoft!

Maybe I would feel better about this product if I charged for every
service call.

I did a bit more reading and it looks like it may be of help to
subscribers afterall. Unfortunately unless it provides a telephone
number to a person it will be useless to her and I am do not use or
subsribe to Onecare.

At least this help link works. :-)

Sorry that I overlooked the fact that you helped her purchase it in the other
post. In that forum post about contacting support, is a link to
http://support.windowsonecare.live.com where a subscriber can sign in with the
Live ID that is associated with the subscription and it will show the valid
support options, including phone and live chat.

Fella's - go find yourself another antivirus suite please. Your going
to run into trouble with this one until MS gets around to fixing it.

I'll second this.

When I first installed Vista, I also installed OneCare. About a month
later, I decided to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, and OneCare didn't
seem to mind -- until one week when, after a OneCare upgrade, OneCare
disabled *and* uninstalled AVG unceremoniously and without warning.

I uninstalled OneCare and reinstalled AVG. And when I replaced my original
boot drive with a 160GB SATA drive and reinstalled Vista, I installed AVG
and left OneCare off.

MS would do well to seriously upgrade the AV protections in OneCare post-
haste.

It doesn't bother me which a/v product you use, but *never* run two of them
concurrently.

You're right -- the Vista Security Center warned of this, and I didn't pay
attention when I installed AVG. >_<

Funny thing, though: after the AVG installation, Security Center said that
AVG was the active anti-virus program, leading me to believe that OneCare's
anti-virus had been disabled. But when OneCare updated, however, it
apparently decided that AVG was too good for my PC and disabled it against
my intentions.

I've learned my lesson: run only one AV program. It's just that, in my
case, it won't be OneCare. Not now, not ever.

OneCare does warn you that it will remove any other AV programs - I guess
that applies even after it's installed.

But yeah, you should have gotten rid of OneCare first.
