I have just finished compiling a distribution list, and upon reviewing
that list I notice that some of the little Rolodex card icons that
appear to the left of each name have a little head on them and some do
not. What is the significance of the little head?

It's just showing that you have more than one person within that list. It
should actually be more than one head... like 3 profiles.

Those are the Contacts who graduated in the upper half of their class.

Actually, each version of Outlook has used a different icon for a Contact
item. I suspect you created some of these Contacts in different versions of
Outlook.

I liked my first answer better. Since Outlook knows everything, it probably
does know which of your Contacts were in the top half of their class.
