little gray bar at bottom of window

There is a little gray bar at the bottom of the window that tells me what's
going on in the window, like "applet started" and "done". Can I make this go
away?

On the Toolbar at the top of the screen click on View.
You should see a check mark next to Status bar.
Click on it to remove the check mark.
