My CD Drive /writer opens and closes when start to I boot up. It then opens
as Windows loads and several times later.

If I manually close it there is a lot of activity indicated by the LED - it
then re-opens.

If I insert a music CD it is ok eventually - but it takes several attempts.
The drive indicator on Mediaplayer indicates "Drive Busy" sometimes - but
usually "No Disk in Drive" With persistence I can get a Audio CD to play

I have run all Malware, Antivirus and Adware. I feel that there is some
buffered command that it is trying to act out.

The read light and the C Drive light flash as though data is being changed
even when no disk is present. Task manager reveals nothing obvious.

Any ideas for purging it is a Liteon read/write unit.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like the drive may be marginal - i.e., close to failing. You could
check to confirm the power and data cables are secure - i.e., unplug and
replug them in, including the connection to the motherboard.

Do you remember when it first started happening? Did you make any hardware
or software changes about the same time?

If you can't remember, you could check the programs and services that start
up during boot. The programs are in the Startup folder in your Start menu +
the ones in the registry key Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows,
Current Version, Run [and, sometimes, RunOnce].

Services are in Right click My Computer, Manage, Services. Scan through and
see if there's anything that might be related to a CD drive. You can change
the properties to start up manually instead of Automatically. If that fixes
it, then you know what's causing the behaviour.

You could also try working with msconfig - although that can take some time,
i.e., many reboots.
 
I'm building a list of cd-drives not to buy. What I found
out about most of them, was they were made before
WinXP SP2 .. or even before WinXP at all. In other
words, they were made broke, and are incompatible
with the latest standards. I've gone through all the
BIOS upgrades on those drives I intend to go through.
I went through all the Plextor driver kludges I could
stand. Now, I won't touch a GoldStar, Lite-on, ..
about a dozen more ... and I'm staying with Sony.
So far, the Sony drives have done every thing I needed
for them to do .... It is something about the ASPI layer
updates and the old cdrom BIOS. Buy Sony. It will
work.
