List of tables not appearing on append queries or importing from E

I use Access 2003. I just started to have this problem. When I want to
create an append query or import an Excel file, Access does not display
either the entire list or only displays a partial list of tables for the mdb
file that I want to bring data into. This does not happen 100% of the time,
but what is preventing this function from not working normally as it has in
the past?

If Access was corrupted, wouldn't every mdb file be affected? I have
compacted/repaired affected mdb files, but the problem persists.
 
Access just isn't reliable enough.

If you want to get the same set of reliability / availability-- for
your data-- Day in and day out--
Then move to SQL Server.
