Yeah... Remember, it isn't Windows, so don't expect it to act, look, or
feel
like Windows. Remember, it took you a long time through a slow process to
learn Windows as good as you do now, so expect the same from Linux.
pc format seemed to think it handled quite well. YOu don't even need
command line level knowledge anymore. I got that far with msdos 3.2 on an
old amstrad with a 360kb floppy disk drive. And they were floppy back then
too. In fact i remember the single sided 170kb variety of the apple II.
Its been along time since i could type out a whole line of code.
Starting to use Linux for the first time, you'll probably want to use KDE
instead of Gnome, and SuSE is far more KDE-centric anyway.
KDE? Gnome? links please
You'll love SuSE Linux. I used it for a long time, and still have my 9.1
disks. I've since started using Mandrake, because the machine I'm on runs
better with Mandrake, but I've always preferred SuSE.
Flat ribbon cables are actually more aerodynamic, as you can fold them
over
against the side of the case and get them cleanly out of the way of the
air. The round cables are stiff, and too big in diameter to do the same,
and hence, are actually less aerodynamic. But hey...they do look cooler...
i wasn't keen on folding the flat ones. Didn't want to pinch off any
wiring. I also found the flat stuff a bastard to manipulate damn stuff was
almost alive. As i only had one 3.5 bay and the 5.1/4 bays so far away from
the 3.5 i bought 2 quick release caddys that happen to be 5 1/4 ones. So
they are now one above the other with the master at the top and jumpers set
to cable select.
The new wire cable i bought is DEFINITELY 133 wire so that solved a
problem i mentioned in a previous thread. The drives are still cable select
but i can now pull the drives out and swap them in thirty seconds.
My 40gb is the master still. It is partitioned into 2 20gb disks. C drive
was 98. D was xp. I have deleted 98 from windows. There is still a 1gb in
use even though explorer says its now empty. The dual boot function still
works so i suspect hidden msdos stuff. It is actually visible with nero
burn file browser.
The plan with linux is to have a dual boot with linux on c and xp on d with
my data on drive f and g (120gb maxtor partitioned in equal sizes).
i can then bugger about with xp and tweak away whilst still having a working
machine albeit linux. Linux is supposed to be less taxing on a system so i
expect more speedy efficient computing without a physical hardware upgrade.
I'm also hoping for more stability and fewer viruses and of course shit
loads of free legit software.
This may be a pipe dream but i cannot ignore that anti microsoft brigade any
longer.
