Hey Michael;

To varying degrees, it'll depend on how you are using your computer (eg
server vs desktop, gaming vs scientific) and which flavor of linux
you're using. Also, the vast majority of distos come with a /lot/ of
applications either already loaded during default install or readily
available from the disto's site.

Having said that, there are one or two apps available <grin> here;

FWIW - you can sort the PL program index pages by OS - might be an easy
way to check on some of your favorites. . .

That's a good start, thx. I was kinda hoping to find the Linux equivalent of
Snapfiles, or NoNags.

There are some pretty good links in the wiki (forgot about that). :(

copied from that page:

I figured the OP is capable of choosing the language link he wants. . .
;)

"The page on other languages: English, Italian, Spanish, French, German,
Hungarian."

For starters, you may want to check the list of precompiled packages or
available ports for your distribution of choice. Debian, for instance,
gives instant access to 8000 packages in the _official_ repositories,
more if you add unofficial ones. Fire up something like Synaptic and
start browsing. Take a deep breath, you'll be browsing for a loooong time.

Still not happy? FreeBSD (not really Linux, but for all practical
purposes it's almost the same) has 15000 entries in its ports tree.

Stop considering your web browser as your only means of acquiring free
software, and you'll go a long way.

You may also want to stop and think about the fact that a lot of the
freeware applications available for Windows (including big "sellers"
like OOo, FF, TB, GAIM and VLC) are open source and multi platform, and
driven by the same forces that are making Linux what it is.

Now, what _I_ would like to see is a good and centralized package
manager for Windows, so I wouldn't have to manually search for, download
and install stuff manually every single time somebody releases an
updated version of an application or hardware driver I use. Anyone have
some good urls?

Only thing I've found is still in pre-rel form. Try

http://www.winpackman.org/ for the forum and stuff and

http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpackman for the actual d/l.
