Back on Nov 12, 2005, MZB posted under this same topic trying to
recover a lost Linksys router password. I am now in the same boat and
have not been able to find a solution. Two of the responses to MZB's
query were of interest, but didn't actually provide a solution:
1. Jim suggested that the current router config be saved offline, then
reset the router. However, as RWS commented, I can't see how to save
the current config without knowing the password?? Does anyone know a
way around this?? A copy of the config would allow me to do a hard
reset on the router and change the password without losing all the
settings.
2. Philip Ashley suggested using Cain&Abel to recover the password. I
took a look at this program, but unless I am misreading the
documentation, Philip's suggestion to use the "sniffer/password" option
would only work if the password was correctly entered from someone
using the browser interface to the router. Assuming the original
poster really has lost "his" password (as I have), the sniffer would
never have a good password to sniff from the network. Is that correct
?? Philip ?? Anyone ??
I have physical access to the router and plenty of time to run
brute-force or dictionary based password cracker programs against it,
but so far have not seen anything suggested which might work on this
router.
Any ideas,
