On WinXP Pro SP2, I have just started getting this problem. When I receive
an e-mail in Outllok Express, most links take me nowhere, while some take me
to apparently random folders on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steven Lyall

Hi Steven,

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express if either are open.

Start/run "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes)

Control panel/Internet options/programs tab, click on "reset all web
settings"

Reopen and retry the links in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Not much to go on from your post...

Are these links from people you know? Are they links to local files or
to webpages?

Are they HTML emails with the hyperlink targets different from what is
written in the link text?

The Outlook Express newsgroups may assist too.

Many thanks. The Start/run piece returned a 'succeeded' message, but I don't
see the 'reset all web settings' option in Control panel/Internet
options/programs tab. This may be something to do with the IE7 Beta 2
(7.0.5335.5) which I can't uninstall becaues when I show updates in
Add/Remove Programs, I see no update for IE7.

Thanks again,

Steven

Please ignore my previous post. I did manage to uninstall IE7 Beta. Then I
did what you suggested and everything works perfectly.

Many thanks,

Steven

I'm having the same problem - but I can't uninstall Internet Explorer 7 Beta2.

The IE7Beta2 update does not show up in my Control Panel / Add or Remove
Programs listing. I checked, and "show updates" is selected - still no
IE7B2.

I've checked to make sure that hidden files are visible.
When I run:
%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

I get the message:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$spuninst refers to a location that is
unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a newtwork.
Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are
connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still
can not be located, the information might have been moved to a different
location.

PLEASE NOTE: BEFORE I found this posting, I had tried several fixes.
First: I did a roll-back to before I installed IE7Beta2. It caused the
system to become unstable giving me errors with the task tray. I undid the
roll-back and the system is stable again.

Then I found 2 answers listed on various WINXP Support Groups.
The first one had these instructions:
"Try:
1. Click Start, click Run
2. Type the following commands in the Run dialog box, and click OK (or hit
ENTER) after each command
(noting the space between the 2 and the next letter):
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll (NB Java may not be installed on your computer and you
may receive an error)"

It was no help -- I received an error on both "mshtml.dll" and msjava.dll"
but the system does not appear to be functioning any better or worse.

The second solution said:
"Hyperlinks in messages stop working
If clicking a hyperlink in Outlook Express appears to do nothing at all,
there are likely one or more registered file associations that are configured
incorrectly. To repair the associations:
1. Open My Computer and click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
2. Click the File Types tab.
3. Select URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol in the list of registered file
types.
4. Click the Advanced button (Windows XP), or the Edit button (other
versions).
5. In the list of Actions, select open and then click the Edit button.
6. The Application used to perform action box should contain this,
including quotation marks:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe†-nohome
If instead it contains a short name version of that path, or an
incorrect path, change it to the above.
7. Click OK, click OK.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the file type URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol
with Privacy.
9. Click OK to close the Folder Options window."

This did not fix anything - but the system doesn't appear to be any worse off.

Uninstalling IE7Beta2 seems to be the real answer - but I won't know until I
can get it done. If you can help, I'd appreciate it.

When did you install IE7 Beta2?

Uninstalling IE7 Beta2:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/03/21/87123.aspx

1. First try uninstalling via Add/Remove Programs. (Tip: Make sure Show
Updates box is checked.)

If IE7 isn't found there, try the following, compiled by/courtesy of MVP
Sandi Hardmeier:

2. Run the commandline

%windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

[%windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (according to the
dated Release Notes)]

Replace %windir% (above) with the path to your Windows folder, most often
'C:\Windows'. Make sure Show Hidden File and Folders is enabled via Control
Panel > Folder Options.

or

3. Go to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Right click on Internet Explorer > New String Value > Name that value
InstalledByUser (the value of the new String should be your User Account
name) > Uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs.

Some software (for example CCleaner) deletes uninstaller directories such as
$NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$. If the $NtUninstallie7bet2pmx$ folder is empty, or
has been deleted completely, whether by third party software or manually to
preserve disk space, you will *not* be able to remove the Beta 2 Preview via
Add/Remove Programs or the commandline. If running System Restore does not
resolve the situation for you, then your only choice is to stay with the
Preview, or format your PC and install Windows anew. You will not be able
to install any future builds of IE7 while Beta 2 Preview is installed, nor
will you be able to run a Repair Install of XP.

As I replied to your other posts about this in MS newsgroups:

[Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and Defaults >
Browser: IE *must* be chosen here if you're running IE7 Beta 2 and want such

I was having the same problem and after checking the internet exploer 7
support page here is what I found and it did work for me. I went back to EI

1. click "start", and then click "control panel"
2. click "add and remove programs"
3. Check at the top of the screen:Show Updates"
4. Scroll down the list to "windows XP - software updates, select "internet
explorer 7 beta 2 preview," and then click "change/remove"--(uf tiy are
rybbubg ubterbet explorer 7 beta 2 -- March 20 or later, it is not necessary
to "check show updates"
5. Go here and select the appropriate version of internet explorer 7 bata 2
that for you operating systen.

Any way that is how I got back to EI 6 and no further problems. I did not
like the IE7 layout. They have some work to do on this version. Hope it
helps. Mflack
