Windows XP SP2, links in e-mail no longer work, but can be copied and pasted
into IE. Is this designed behaviour, or a cockup?

Hi David

Try this:

From Start>Run type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Please note the space between the 2 and u.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools>Internet Options>Programs and
click on 'Reset Web Settings...'. Make sure that your e-mail program is
closed before you start this procedure, then try the links again.

Hi, David.

Links in emails you receive should work. Links in a message that you are
COMPOSING don't work; that behavior hasn't changed in SP2.

In other words, if I click on a link in this message as I'm drafting it,
nothing happens. But, after I Send it and receive it back from the news
server, the link will work fine. To test a link when drafting, I can click
the Red X and tell OE, Yes, save changes. OE will put the message into my
Drafts folder; if I view the Draft in the Preview Pane, the link will work
fine from there. Then I can Open the Draft (for continued editing, if I
like) and Send it from there, knowing the link will work for the recipient.

Thanks RC. The problem was registering urlmon.dll, which I have now done,
and the links work.

David

You're welcome David.

They don't work again! The registry is supposed to have the following
according to MS:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Name: (Default)
Value: IDispatch
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

The actual present values are, in order:

IMAPIMessageSite

{4d2f086c-6ea3-101b-a18a-00aa00446eo7}

{4d2f086c-6ea3-101b-a18a-00aa00446eo7}

Should I alter the values to the MS ones above? If so, what's the best way
please? I hate messing with the registry.

Hi

Did you 'Reset Web Settings...' as well and made sure that OE was closed
before executing 'urlmon.dll'?

I didn't the first time. I have just gone through the entire procedure
again, with all the dlls in the MS KB article, including urlmon.dll, and
then Reset Web Settings, and it doesn't work. Was it something I said to
XP?

David

No, it was nothing you said to XP - you ought hear what I come out with
sometimes!!

You may be better off trying the OE Gurus:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

Click on the link - it will load the last 300 messages.

Well, XP has had a whole night to think about its recalcitrant behaviour,
and has now decided to open the links. I wonder how long it will be before
it goes into another tantrum. Incidentally, links opened from other e-mail
not in this newsgroup, so maybe it just gets the hump here. Interestingly,
I went to the OE6 newsgroup as advised by someone here, and it opened
yesterday, but today - zip. I got it open eventually by right click and
catchup, but the type is all not bold, all showing as read. Meanwhile, the
newsgroup titles in the left pane are now just in black, two of them bold,
one not. Never mind, tomorrow is another day.

David

Hi Will - I don't know whether you can help on this, but the link you gave
me didn't work, so I subscribed to the OE6 group in the ordinary way. It
worked immediately, and looked normal, but since then, after a couple of
cold boots and restarts, it does not load the files unless I use 'Catch up'.
The headers, when they appear, are in plain black, not bold. However, since
then, the links are working in the mail again, or at least, they were a few
minutes ago, so it is academic really. What a treasure XP is!
