Linking db4 with WRONG EXT (.dat)

Dear all

I want to link a database in format db4 but using .dat ext.
I have tried to change the ext to .dbf, and it link to
access fine. (but this is not an option for me)

Why isn't it an option?

Access is pretty strict about what extensions it'll allow.
 
Can you create a copy of the current version of the file, renaming the
extension as you make the copy, then delete the copy when you're done?
