How can I link a jpeg picture to play an avi file in PowerPoint? I don't want
it to then play the file in an external player, but make it play like an
embedded file.

I think I understand your question. Use your Action
Settings (Slide Show > Action Settings) to establish a
link between your photo and AVI file.

Randy,
If you are using PPT 2002 or later, you can change the start animation for
the avi to be triggered by the jpeg instead of the avi itself. Short
version: Right click the animation for the avi and select Timing. Click the
Triggers button. Click the radio button for "Start effect on click of" and
then select the jpeg from the drop down list.
