Is there a way to add a link in word that will display a number from an Excel
worksheet cell?

Select the cell in Excel, Copy, goto Word, have cursor where you want the
number displayed, Edit Paste Special, click the Paste Link, and select the
option that is best for you. Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Object will
bring over copy of how it looks in Excel, borders/formats included.
Unformatted Unicode Text will bring over the number without any formatting.
This field can now be refreshed if the Excel is changed.
Hope this helps

How is the word link refreshed when the Excel file is changed. Do the files
need to close? Is there a menu selection to refresh word?

F9 will refresh the link, either select it on its own or Ctrl+A to select the
whole document, then F9 to refresh all links and fields in the document,
icluding Table of Contents and Cross References.
Also in Tools Options, Print there are two check boxes for Update Fieds and
Update Links (the one you want) which will refresh these before you print.
Also Tools, Options, General Update Automatic links at Open, could be
useful. You will have to make the link automatic from the Edit, Links listing.
Hope this helps
