line filter and an inline splitter

What is a line filter and an inline splitter? I think I had one before, but
I moved recently -- and I think it got lost "in the shuffle".

it's a little white box 2" by 3" that plugs in the tel socket and the
braodband comes out one side and the tel out the other.
 
I remember now [4/14]. I had it before when I had DSL. Now I have
cable and I don't need a line filter.
