Does anyone know what the technical character limit is on the length of names
applied to cells? Also, does anyone know what the technical character limit
is on the length of Scenario names? (Excel 2003)

I know that cell names cannot contain spaces, while Scenario names can. I
have discovered through trial-and-error that only the first 35 characters of
Scenario names will appear in the Scenario Manager's list. I have also
discovered that only the first 17 characters of call names will appear in the
Add Values to Scenarios dialog box.

I found in the Knowledge Base that the only limit to the number of Scenarios
that can be created on a worksheet is your system resources, but that only
the first 251 scenarios can be shown on a Scenario Report. I have been not
been able to find anything online or through trial-and-error, however, that
tells me if there is any technical limit on the lenght of cell names or
Scenario names that can be created and/or appear on Scenario Reports.

If anyone knows or knows where I might be able to find this information, I
would appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi

doing a search in help - entered range names into the ask a question box ...
third item returned - "About labels and names in formulas" - provides the
following information:
*********
Guidelines for names
What characters are allowed? The first character of a name must be a letter
or an underscore character. Remaining characters in the name can be letters,
numbers, periods, and underscore characters.

Can names be cell references? Names cannot be the same as a cell reference,
such as Z$100 or R1C1.

Can more than one word be used? Yes, but spaces are not allowed. Underscore
characters and periods may be used as word separators- for example,
Sales_Tax or First.Quarter.

How many characters can be used? A name can contain up to 255 characters.

Note If a name defined for a range contains more than 253 characters, you
cannot select it from the Name box.

couldn't find the answers in Help on the scenario questions ... but a handy
reference for you might be the "Excel specifications and limits" topic under
help which, while it doesn't mention name lengths, does contain a list of
other "handy" things to know.

JulieD,

Thanks for the information on cell name length. I had 255 or 256 in my
head, but for some reason I just couldn't find it stated in Help; somehow I
missed it.

Thanks for the suggestion on the "Excel specifications and limits" Help
topic, but I had already found it. You're quite right in saying it's a handy
page. That's where I found that only 251 Scenarios can be shown on Scenarion
reports.

Again, thanks for the information, and if you do happen to stumble across
any information about limits on Scenario name lengths, I'd appreciate it.
