administrator accounts can print to the attached printer but limited users
can't. How do I get "limiteds" to print? Tnx

You need to add user permissions from the security tab and this has to be
done from an administrator account.

if you do not find security tab, simple file sharing should have been
enabled. You can disable it from folder options.

Usually seen on an XP Home PC with Norton products installed.

Either:

Use another Internet Security application or set them to print direct,
rather than use the print spooler.

Might also help to set "read and execute" permissions for the users group on
this folder:

C:\Windows\system32\spools

Must be done from an admin account. In XP Home you would have to boot into
Safe mode to access the Admin account. In Pro hit ctrl+alt+delete twice at
the logon screen and type it in.

How to start in Safe mode:

Unless it is XP Home, then it has to be done in Safe Mode.

Cari suggested changing from print spool to print direct and that does allow
the users to print now. Printer response time is slow till beginning print
but it does print. Any way to cut the new lag time too? Or is it true that
you can't have your cake and eat it too? Tnx Cari. I didn't try any of the
other suggestions yet since this worked and seemed like an easy fix....HDBob

I have this problem as well. I'm running XP Home with SP2, and I do have a
few Symantec / Norton products installed (e.g. NAV 2005 with Internet Worm
Protection and Norton Ghost).

For a short term fix, I followed Cari's suggestion (Thanks, Cari!) and
changed the printer setup from spooling to printing directly. This does
allow printing from the limited account, but as noted by HDBob, printing is
"very" slow from the limited account -- e.g. a 65 second wait before the
printer starts to print a 1 page text document.

Because of the slow printer response, I tried to pursue the "permissions"
idea presented by a few people, but I haven't been able to get that to work
yet when the printer is set up for spooling. I'll give a brief description
of what I've done so far, but have some questions and am wondering if anyone
could provide (or point me too) more specific instructions.

WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR
----------------------------------
As noted by Steve and Rick, I can only access the permissions when booting
in safe mode and logging on as an administrator. While logged on as an
administrator in safe mode, I've done the following.

1. Set up the following folders as shared:
Windows\System32\Spool
Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers
Windows\System32\Spool\Printers

2. Attempted to set up permissions to at least allow read/write capabilities.

QUESTIONS
------------------
But I'm not sure exactly how to set up the permissions. I see four main
account categories: Administrators, Creator/Owner, System, Users. Of those,
I focused on two (Creator/Owner and Users), as I figured one of these would
most likely be the category that would apply to someone with a limited
account. I tried to set both of those two categories up to at least have
read/write permissions for the folders noted above that I had set to be
shared. But... I'm only guessing at the settings required and not doing a
very good job of it based on the results. ;-)

So I have have quite a few questions. e.g.
1. Am I focusing on the right account category(ies)?
2. What specific permissions have to be selected?
3. Should inheritance rules be turned on? If so, what folders should be
set up to inherit permissions, and what from what higher level folder(s)
should the permissions be inherited?
4. Am I on track in regard to the folders I'm trying to work with under
Windows]System32? If so, what is the highest level folder for which I should
set permissions? (i.e. Spool? Drivers? Printers?). If I'm not on track,
what folder(s) should I be setting permissions for?
5. Is there a trick to setting the permissions? When I select permissions
from the Security tab (at least I think it was the Security tab), then select
apply, all the check marks that were by my selections just disappear. i.e.
The boxes next to each permission goes back to being empty.
6. And finally, in regard to the Norton products I have installed, does
anyone know if I have one of the products that can cause the printer to not
work for limited accounts? If so, are there any Norton settings that can be
tweaked to eliminate the problem.

FRUSTRATION
---------------------
I find it hard to understand why any default setup option/parm for either XP
or Noron should interfere with something as basic as a person being able to
print the documents created under his/her own logon, just because it's a
limited account! What's the value of limited accounts in XP Home, if the
limited account owners can't print their own documents?? :-(
