Limited or no connectivity

After loading Win XP and SP2 on a buddys computer there is a constant message
about limited or no connectivity to the Internet.

He uses charter highspeed and has the computer connected directly to the
modem via ethernet. A reboot usually allows the problem to temporarily
subside.

I think there might be an issue with the NIC in this machine, but havent any
problems with this PC on other networks.

Any ideas?

I'm having the same troubles with my pc. (see SP2 - now can't access the
internet below) and I have just come accross this website:

I haven't been able to try the fix yet as I'm at work but it might help you
