I have been having one heck of a time trying to install XP Home edition on a
Hewlett Packard desktop.

Due to one KB article (Q311755) and problem I was having, I have been trying
to Xcopy the files and subdirectories from the i386 directory on the CD Rom
to the hard drive. I use the following command:

c:> r:\i386 c:\i386 /e

It gets about 3/4 of the way through copying the files in the main
directory, then it seems to try to read the floppy drive and it says 'file
not found'.

What the heck is up with this? Has anyone seen this?

Well, that got me at least into the part where you can see the XP screen
that says its installing windows.

Then I get an error that says 'the manifest file does not begin with the
required tag and format information'. Not sure how the manifest file could
be wrong if it came from the cd.

Thanks.

Carey,

Thanks for your help.

I have tried two different (new) XP Home CDs with the same result.

Well, actually, not exactly the same error, but each time, it does error out
at exactly the same place in the install.

I believe the overriding issue here may be hardware. This machine is an
older HP desktop (not sitting in front of it right now so I can't recall the
model). I am preparing to go back to ME now.

The ironic thing is that the OEM restore CD doesn't not even work.
Theoretically, you are supposed to be able to format the hard drive, drop
the CD into the CD player, reboot and it will boot from the CD. But it
doesn't.

Anyway, thanks for the help. If I can only get ME on this thing, I'll call
it a lesson learned.

Finally got XP to install.

In installed a clean version of ME and then did an upgrade to XP. Looks like
things are working well.

Thanks for all the help.
