I use the alt+tab to toggle between applications but find it tedious when I
have, say, five spreadsheets and three Word documents open and each uses a
display (along with my mail program, browser, and whatever else is happening).

Can I modify the display to Excel only takes up one image?

Once in XL I can toggle easily between worksheets with cntl+tab.

Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the reply. I'd taken Windows XP General as dealing with general
issues related to the Windows interface.

I don't think it belongs in Excel because it seems a function of the windows
display. In my case, it is _usually_ a pile of Excel files I have open but it
could be multiple PDF documents that clutter the alt+tab queue.

In some older version of Windows I would only see one icon for each running
application.

Anyhow, I'll try elsewhere and try to find the explanation of what the
groups are really intended to deal with.

There is a setting in Excel called "Windows in Taskbar" if you uncheck this,
you will only have a single icon in the taskbar and a single icon when you
ALT-TAB. The setting is found under Tools>Options>View.
