licensing question

I have just been asked to update 25 pcs in a small office
from 98 to XP Pro. The controller, who had been doing the
system management, purchased 25 individual versions (celo-
wrapped boxes w/cds) of XP Pro Upgrade. I'd like to use
DriveImage and sysprep to clone the PCs, but, I have 2
questions.
1. How can I check the HAL on the 98 machines to ensure
they are the same?
2. Using Sysprep, will it use the product key of the
source computer and copy it to all the others? Will this
cause a problem when activating?

Any help or suggestions would be great. Also, any ideas
on how I can automate this, places to go for more info on
using diskimaging/sysprep, are also much appreciated.

Thanks.

Jeff

Carey,

Thanks for the reply. Still not clear, however, on how to
do this. The way I understand it, product activation
requires a unique key for each pc attempting activation.
If I use sysprep, and a disk image, how do I get the
product key onto the newly imaged pc after I run sysprep?

You need to use the Volume License version of Windows XP.
If you are using the retail version, then each Product Key must
be entered individually. Volume License versions do not have
an activation requirement.

You can either use the VLK (Volume License) version of Windows XP... or... you can use sysrep to "seal" the install so that it prompts for cd keys on each pc after the install is complete. Take a look @ http://www.msfn.org/unattended for making unattended install cds using the WinXP-VLK. Use the links Carey posted for using sysrep.
