I installed XP Pro via a new installation on an HP
Pavilion that previously had XP Home on it. During the
installation it would not accept my Product Key from my
XP Pro purchase. Because I was stuck without an
operating system I obtained a copy (which I think came
from an msdn package) and was able to complete the
install. Now when I try to download XP SP1 or install it
from CD it keeps telling me that I have an invalid
Product Key. I used the Activation WIzard to try and
change the PRodKey but it would not accept it. I called
Microsoft and they gave me another key and that did not
work either.

The reason I want this SP it because since I installed XP
Pro the pc my usb ports do not work except for my
printer. I don't know that the SP will help but I also
have Office 2003 which requires it.

Microsoft is the only source for a valid Product Key.
You said "I obtained a copy (which I think came from an msdn package)"
How could you not know?
It is your MSDN license correct?
If it is someone else's MSDN license, they can not share components of
their subscription with anyone.
That may be the source of your issues.

What is the source of your original Product Key?
Exactly what CD are you using?
Did they come together?
See if this applies:

Hello,
That is volume. So the initial install was done with Volume Media and a
Volume product key.
Thanks,
