When I have the 2 of them on the same cable the computer freezes before
windows boots!

I have tried all correct combinations (master, slave, cable select)

Any Ideas what I can do?

Likely a driver conflict with CD/DVD software. Are they recognised
correctly in BIOS / POST?

Remove all OEM or retail software such as Nero, Roxio, InCD, Cyberlink
PowerDVD, etc. and reboot. Power down and reconnect drives noting if they
show up correctly in POST and in WinXP once loaded.

Do not use OEM software with more than one drive (from Nero).

I have had a similar problem..
Panasonic DVD player & LG CD burner on a SiS board..
LG DVD player & Plextor CD burner on a ASUS board..
Panasonic DVD & Plextor CD burner on a diff. ASUS board..
in the mean time the Panasonic DVD player died under the stress..
The LG DVD worked with the Plextor on a ASUS P4PE but not on a P4P800
& the Panasonic (before it died) worked with Plextor on a ASUS P4P800..
No explaination for it..ASUS repair shop hadnothing either on why..

Thanks Scott for the input....

....so Im not the only one who has run into these strange things...
I have an LG dvd player.. Im gonna try installing that along with the LG DVD
writer.
Logically that should work..... Unless LG is doing a very bad job on testing
its hardware!

Kenny,

My DRD-8160B (DVDRom, Master) works wonderfully with a GSA-4120B (DVD+/-RW,
slave).

I have had LG drives for several years, different varieties and just
upgraded my mobo to the A7n8x deluxe Asus, using the ide cable that Asus
supplied, I have my 4160b dvd burner as master and a CD burner, LG also as
slave with a message at boot that sez there is no 80 connector cable on the
slave(?) kinda weird, but doesn't seem to be affecting useage or
performance, so far. This is the first indication of anything that I have
experienced with LGs and I love 'em..
You are right; it may be your mobo(?)

I had a similar problem with my LG DVD drive where I used a programme called
Cute DVD/CD copier. I backed up on DVD and burned ok but when I put DVD in
to check contents My DVD ram on drive 3 became a CD drive and said drive E
not available or something similar in a pop up window...Had me buggered until
I spoke to a mate in the computing game who suggested it was my software. He
asked if I had Nero as well as my generic program. I did have both. He
suggest I delete the Cute dvd/cd prog and to back up on Nero using v6. I did
this e.g deleted the generic copier programme and used Nero. Surprise it
worked perfectly and no problems.
I would never have imagined software would conflict like this as stand alone
programmes - but it does.
So in a nutshell if you have Nero - use it and get rid of other copier
programmes unless you test them and they are ok.
I still have Roxio on my comp alongside Nero and no problems. yet
