I've just put a DVD burner into an external case with a USB 2.0
connection. I'd like to be able to use it at work, but I shouldn't
install software on the office workstation without a business case for
it... Are there any no-install DVD burner programs that I could put
onto a thumbdrive?

Silent Night Micro CD burner runs from a floppy.
Current version is shareware, so look for an earlier freeware version.
It burns DVD too, but I don't know if it works with USB drives.

Warning - the 5.0.9 beta "dials" home and when I blocked it from my
firewall, the program ran very slow and strange. It also said Demo-not
registered.
