Hello!

I am looking for a freeware program to play DVD disks using a DVD drive in
my PC. PowerDVD is awful.

My DVD drive is a LG 4522B (combo)

Videolan's vlc is very good. They have a multi-platform prog and a good
history of development and updates.

Those with older computers and/or video cards without MPEG-decoding
capability might find that neither Media Player Classic nor any other
software, free or otherwise, will provide satisfactory results. I know
of two solutions to this problem - neither of which, unfortunately, are
free. One is to upgrade your computer and/or video card. The other, far
cheaper solution is the one that I use. However, since some here don't
consider it "freeware" (although the software is free, and *meant* to be
free), I've taken some heat in the past for mentioning it in this newsgroup.

Therefore, if you have an older computer or a video card without
MPEG-decoding capability, and you want a DVD-playing solution that
actually *works*, please feel free to e-mail me directly. (In case
anyone is wondering, I'm not selling anything, and I don't benefit
monetarily in any way from recommending this particular solution.)

Not a problem here. I have enough CPU computing power.

I got fed up with PowerDVD and dowloaded the free VLC Media Player. It
is not as "pretty" as PowerDVD but is has some great features and lets
me watch my NetFlix DVDs. I had a problem with PowerDVD v5.0 in that
the controls on the top an bottom would open at random intervals and
stay open until I clicked "Resume" or the video controls. Sometimes
that worked and sometimes not.

The only help I could get from the Dell Forum involved hours of
uninstalling and re-installing all my buring software. Not my idea of a
fun.

I ran four differnt spyware adware checks and none of them indicated
that VLC planted unwanted things on my computer.
