level buttons not visible for subtotal

The level buttons have disappeared from my excel when using subtotal.
Have I turned them off? Or is this an re-install issue?

I am currently using Excel 2003 sp3 on XP Pro

Tools, Options, View Tab,
Windows Options - Outline symbols (Should be checked)

It was checked, but I unchecked and rechecked and it is working now
