Lettered Pictures

Ocassionly, I receive email which should contain photographs. Instead of
seeing those photographs I get nothing but a lot of letters and symbols.
What can I do about this to see the photograph?

What program are you using to view these pictures? What file types are they?
Are you opening them directly from the email or are you first saving them to
the computer?
