I'm trying to put videos into my PowerPoint presentation. The video will only
play its full lenth when a presentation or preview is NOT taking place. So
when I start the slideshow or preview a slide, the video will only play for a
few seconds. It stops in mid video. Why?

Potential reasons depend upon how you inserted the video into PowerPoint.
If you did Insert->Movies and Sounds->Movie from File then your slide should
wait until the video stops (regardless if advance on time is set). If you
insert a Windows Media Player object or some other object then the slide
will advance if you have it set to advance on time regardless of where the
movie is.

What Version of PowerPoint? How are you inserting the movie? What type of
movie is it?

It is PowerPoint 2003 and I am inserting the video by selecting Insert>Movies
and Sounds>Movie from File. The movie clip is an .MPG file. Still, my clips
stop after about 10 seconds. I've tried opening a new and blank project and
inserting only a mpg video and I still have the same problem. I know the
problem is simple, I just cant find it. Thank you for your help by the way!

When you insert the movie and PowerPoint asks you if you want the movie to
play automatically, do you accept that option?

Also, does this behavior replicate with all movie files or is it only this
particular MPEG file.

Also try playing the file with the MCI Media Player - does it play well? You
can run the MCI Player by choosing Run in the Windows Start Menu and
choosing either:

mplayer.exe
mplayer32.exe
mplay32.exe

depending on your version of Windows.

It could also be a system resources issue.

Yes, I choose the "Play Automatically" option. And I have also tried
inserting other MPG files, and I get the same problem. Maybe it because the
movies are MPG?? It could be the device that Im recording the video with??
Who knows...I just hate to give up. Thanks for the tips guys :)

What happens when you play the movies using the MCI Media Player?
(Start/Run/mplay32.exe)

This is interesting because the video plays its full length when I use MCI
Media Player, however the clock freezes at about 12 seconds as the movie
continues to play. 12 seconds is exactly where the video would stop while
running it in a powerpoint presentation. Weird.

Yeah, weird.

What codec was used on the file?

Does it have a variable bit rate? I've seen something similar with a sound
file that had a VBR. Changing to constant BR fixed it.

Hello,

With the movie selected on the slide, choose Edit -> Movie Object...

In this dialog, what does it report for "Total playing time:"

If MCI is telling PowerPoint that the movie is only 12 seconds long, that's
as long as it's going to play in PowerPoint.
