Does anyone know where someone could find the proper steps/procedures to
delete the files/folders that windows update leaves laying around?

Exp. Directory “C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB922616$â€

Can they be deleted without breaking Windows XP Home/Professional?

Thanks,

K

Sure you can. No problem. Just make sure you will not need to uninstall it
before you delete it.

Open an Explorer window to C:\Windows (make sure that you can see those directories, although you obviously can already). Now
select one or more of them, then press Delete (or Shift+Delete if you want to skip the Recycle Bin). Done. :-)

Yup, they are just uninstall files for Windows updates. If you won't be uninstalling the updates (and there is little reason to do
so), then you can safely delete the files (which can take up quite a bit of space.)

DON'T DELETE C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$

Try this neat program from Doug Knox (MVP)
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_remove_hotfix_backup.zip

They didn't ask about $hf_mig$, but you're right, it should be left
alone. Here's why: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824994 (I hate it
when people say to do or not do something but dont' explain why.)

You mean 4 $* directories in Windows right?

Yep. the hf_mig, MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2, NtUninstallKB888111WXPSP2 and
NtUninstallKB917734_WMP10
