leaving the PC on

Hello. I have the following problem: I can't leave my PC on.
When I use it, everything works perfectly, but I need to leave it
running all day because it shares an Internet connection, but it hangs,
doing absolutely nothing. What could it be?
When I come back after some hours it hung and I need to reboot from the
reset button in the CPU.
Any suggestion? Thanks in advance =)

Same here. I notice it more when I have something running like a USB device
like a webcam for example.
No mouse movement or keyboard movement brings it back not even cntrl alt
delete.
It's very frustrating because nothing shows in the error log either. I've
seen posts pertaining to this issue
tons of times. I don't have my pc set up to hibernate or stand by either.
At one given time I reset the button and rebooted and got a system recovery
error and when submitted
to Microsoft gave me the Device driver and referred me to NVIDIA. I had
already updated the driver.
Doesn't happen all the time only once in and awhile.
I have reinstalled Windows twice to bare bones without any added software
hardware or USB devices and still had the problem.
I just ordered an ATI video card to unload this NVIDIA to see if thats the
problem.
One can say it's the USB device or software causing the problem but as I
said I was down to bare bones
and the hanging pc still occured on occasion after I would walk away for a
few minutes and come back.

My stats are
XP PRO
1.9ghz Pentium4
512mb RAM
GeForce2 MX/MX400 64MB

Double check that you have a good ground at your AC outlet. If using a surge
protector try without it for a few days.

Well, I used to have this problem like 2 weeks ago, then I didn't have my PC
cuz I had a problem and I left it for technical service. When it came back I
formatted and reinstalled (because I'm a freak and I don't like strangers to
use my PC) and I didn't have this problem at first, actually I left it on
for like 13 hours and when I came back from school it was still working, I
used it 30 minutes, left again and came back 2 hours later and it was hung!
It's connected to the Internet (that's why I have to leave it on, it shares
the connection with my sister's PC) through an USB ADSL modem.
Any suggestion?
I have WinXP Pro, Intel Penitum 4, 256mb ram, onboard video card.

Trade in your USB ADSL modem for a "conventional" ADSL modem with an
ethernet connection. Then add a home cable/adsl router to the
configuration and both computers can share the Internet connection
seamlessly with no requirement for one computer to be left on all of
the time.

Good luck

Hangs as in it will not even respond to Cntrl-Alt-Del? Or
hang as in the screen displays nothing? Or hangs as in the
current window does not respond?

What does the system (event) log say? What is reported by
Device Manager? What have been assigned to timeout - sleep,
disk drive powers down, etc? What is the hardware? What did
those free and comprehensive diagnostics from the manufacturer
report? Should we assume you are using XP?

Well, I thought about that, but wasn't sure... so thank you very much ^^
Now, does any1 know why I have this problem? I used to have a "smaller"
(less capacity) PC with the same modem and blah blah and there were no
probs
Thanks

Hello, thank you so much for replying.

How do I check the system log?
Device manager does not report any error in the devices.
I have disabled the comp to automatically turn off the monitor, go on
standby, shut down, turn off disks power (by the way, what does this do
besides saving energy? the comp can be used again without restarting?) or
anyhing like that
I have a Pentium 4, 256MB RAM, 2.4 Ghz, and I connect to the Internet
through an USB ADSL modem.
I didn't have a report from the manufacturer. What happened is the
following: I bought the PC and 6 days later it was broken, it was a problem
with the motherboar which came failed. By the way, during those 6 days I
could share the Internet connection using ICS, but now (after having it
back, re-formatting and re-installing) it doesn't work properly! So I use
Wingate. (anyway, I have posted this on the Networking newsgroup, although
no one has answered lol)
Yes, I use WinXP Professional.

Thanks for helping.

Wa, I have the same pain too.

When I used "standby" to shutdown the pc, I just can't reboot it to the
former state .And I must reset. This is so inconvenience.

What is a "report from the manufacturer"? Are you confusing
a report with comprehensive diagnostics that test all
hardware? If you manufacturer has any credibility, then he
provides, for free, comprehensive diagnostics for all machine
hardware.

System or Event log. See Windows Help for details. This
is where all critical system problems are stored in a log.

Answer to these questions is still required:
Hangs as in it will not even respond to Cntrl-Alt-Del? Or
hang as in the screen displays nothing? Or hangs as in the
current window does not respond?

If ICS does not even work, then why is the manufacture not
fixing the machine. Or it is that you just did not enable
(load) the Windows program that enables ICS?

Few will respond to your previous post because it is so
devoid of useful information. For example, without details as
to what you called "hung", then the best answer is virtually
everything in the machine is defective. Currently based upon
information provided, the number of possible reasons would be
about as many words in this post.

I don't have report from the mantufacturer I didn't send my PC there.
I checked the Event log and last Warning and Error messages are from
some days ago
Hangs as it doesn't respond to ANYTHING, I have to reset it from the
reset button in the CPU. When I left runnin an screen saver showing the
time, I could even see the time when it hung cuz the image was frozen in the
monitor.
ICS used to work! When I reinstalled WinXP and configured everything
exactly as before, it didn't work properly! What could be causing that?

Thanks for helping! ^^

It called a comprehensive diagnostic. Watch Star Trek.
What do they do first to fix things. Again please read this
carefully:

Comprehensive diagnostic. The program that all responsible
computer manufacturers provide for free. Again - not a
report. When the Enterprise is in trouble, do they read a
report from the shipyard?

You don't care when those Event logs messages existed. You
post them up front with every last letter exactly as printed
if you don't understand what they say.

Hang as what does not respond to anything. Which lights are
on and off. You mean every light suddenly goes out? If any
light is on, then something is still working. Screen is
completely blank or just stuck. To not be responding to
anything, screen must be so completely blank that even monitor
shuts off. If computer is doing something, then monitor stays
powered.

Frozen clock on monitor is useful information. What about
mouse arrow. Does it remain on screen but unresponsive? Does
nothing happen when Cntrl-Alt-Del is pressed or does computer
keep doing something - just display same screen? When the
Caps Lock key or Scroll Lock key is pressed, do any lights on
keyboard change?

If ICS did not work, then how do you know it did not work.
Details. Every little detail means about one thousand
possibilities eliminated. What exactly is the message that
said ICS did not work.

In the meantime, numerous strange hardware problems appear
if DC voltages are not first verified using a 3.5 digit
multimeter. Details provided in previous posts:

Hi. Thanks for helping.

Well it seems like Admiral is not a responsible manufacturer because I don't
have any program to check the hardware. I just have a CD with all the
drivers for the hardware and some extra tools which are NOT diagnostic
tools.

I checked the event viewer and there were some things I didn't understand.

Well, it hangs and does not respond to any key I press in the keyboard (not
even Ctrl+Alt+Del). The lights of the keyboard are exactly as I left them
before leaving. What I said about the clock is this: last times when it
hung, there was a screensaver configured, the one that shows the time, and
as it was frozen I could see the time the comp stopped working. Yes, the
monitor is still powered on (indeed I turn it off when I leave, but when I
come back and turn it back on it shows the frozen image of the screensaver).

ICS did not work properly. I installed absolutely everything and it seemed
to work ok, no error messages during installation. But from client computer,
I could only browse SOME websites, and for example MSN Messenger couldn't
connect. Why? Don' know! REALLY strange!! The sites that it loaded they were
loaded perfectly and at a reasonable and common speed, the ones that
couldn't load, they were just trying to be loaded for ages. Problem of those
websites? No, because they could be accessed with no problems from the host
computer. I tried lots of websites! For example, everything under Microsoft
domain couldn't be browsed (I tried download.microsoft.com www.microsoft.com
messenger.msn.com etc. etc. etc.).

Power problems? Don't think so. I have received the comp from the technical
serice and no problems were reported.

Thanks a lot for helping ^^
