It's not a system file. The safe method is to move it to
some junk folder, wait a week or two, then delete it.

In addition to the last post, it would be interesting to see what Search
would turn up as regards to a file with a similar name.

I google everything before I ask, 250,000 'LDR' hits, seems search engines
ignore the '$' symbols or there are no instances of it.
I think it is a system file from a failed install attempt of XP pro on
another hard drive. I tried to install from the HDD instead of the CD, this
might be why. I found this inside the file:

"found only %dK of low memory. 512k of low memory
is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your
computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer.
Windows NT has not found enough extended memory. 7Mb of extended
memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your
computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer.
Memory Map:%lx - %lx NTLDR is corrupt. The system cannot boot. NTLDR is
corrupt. The system cannot boot"

This sounds like setup dialogue and I think it is a preinstalled NTLDR.SYS
(like the Windows install disks exporer.EX_) .

I have a "Quarantine" folder for things like this which is essentially what
Pegasus , the "MVP" said..what are you an MVP of exactly?

Thanks for your responses.

Well what i meant was to Search the files on your own computer for the
character string as "All or part of a file name" or "A word or phrase in the
file". The hits you get might tell you something.

Open it up in a text (eg notepad, wordpad) or hex editor. May provide some
clues.

I have run into this before and couldn't find an answer. How do you Google
for something that starts or ends with $?

Don't think you can, since it's treated as a word separator

Jon

I didn't think you could. I spent a few hours trying to figure it out and
couldn't get it to work. Just checking if anyone else knew of a way :-)

How do you Google for something that starts or ends with $?"

Exactly. Thats why I had 250,000 hits on 'NLR', in most
(traditional/mainstream/microsoft) coding what does "$" mean? Ie: "*" is a
wildcard _ or "box character/%20" can be 'space'....so is "$" a windows based
"undefined character'?

Thanks for all your replies but based on the content of the file I have to
assume its from the 'Hard drive as opposed to CD' OS installation attempt. I
moved it , rebooted and added another new HDD in between and everything is
fine.

Callmark - Why would I query my HDD for a document I can find? There are no
help/suport files for this and I still have found no documents on $NLR$
online (other than in asian). Thank you for your effort though.

As I mentioned I believe it to be part of the preinstalled NTDLR.SYS (on the
Win XP CD it shows as NTDLR.SY_ or something, during installation it must
change its 'temp' filename. Because the installation failed not all temp
files were erased as I also found the file dir C:\_c $ & with the sub dir's
C:\_c $ &\$WIN_NT$.~BT and C:\_c $ &\$WIN_NT$.~LS . By the way this was a
downloaded copy, I never intended to use it I'm just a hacking hobbyist
trying to dull the monotony from my abstinent nightlife)

Pegasus - Thank you for sending me a site a non-MVP cannot log onto...

Kerry Brown the content of $DLR$.file is far too similar too NTDLR.sys to
ignore (it's 10 MB more than NTDLR.sys but the code is nearly identical. I
could post it if you want it.

Thanks again for all your posts but it seems to be licked.

Thank you Almighty Pegausus for enlightening me to what a 'MVP' is but I
recall asking you what you are an MVP "OF". (phoenetically like 'AH-V')

Exactly. Thats why I had 250,000 hits on 'NLR', in most
(traditional/mainstream/microsoft) coding what does "$" mean? Ie: "*" is a
wildcard _ or "box character/%20" can be an internet 'word seperator'....so
is "$" a windows based "word seperator'?

Thanks for all your replies but based on the content of the file I have to
assume its from the 'Hard drive as opposed to CD' OS installation attempt. I
moved it , rebooted and added another new HDD in between and everything is

If its not online it's not supposed to be in your computer...thats just the
way it is these days. Try to google any random filename (windows rooted) and
see what I mean. Sorry for sounding harsh but I do appreciate your offering.

As I mentioned I believe it to be part of the pre-installed NTDLR.SYS (on
the Win XP CD it shows as NTDLR.SY_ or something, during installation it must
change its 'temp' filename. Because the installation failed not all temp
files were erased (I guess) as I also found the file directories C:\_c $ &
with the sub dir's C:\_c $ &\$WIN_NT$.~BT and C:\_c $ &\$WIN_NT$.~LS with
system files within.

By the way this was a downloaded copy, I never intended to use it I'm just
a hacking hobbyist trying to dull the monotony from my abstinent nightlife, I
learn how to find order from chaos, like:
p.s. there is a way to bypass java credit card forms to order from large
corps. but I still pay my way through, not all that is invisible stays
hidden?! esp. when microsoft sends you the tools for free...but this is
another learning issue)

Pegasus - Thank you for sending me a site about MVP's, something you will
never be a part of...P.S. most MVP's state what they are MVP of in their P.S.
(post script).

Kerry Brown the content of $DLR$.file is far too similar too NTDLR.sys to
ignore (it's 10 kb's more than NTDLR.sys but the code is nearly identical. I
could post it for you if you want it but all the GUI messages are the same
(the rest is gibberish without .exe explorers).

Thanks again for all your posts but it seems to be licked.

I am a yahoo'er but the process must be similar in google: In Advanced
Search you can limit the query to a particular domain such as .gov, .org or
..edu. I find these domains much more useful for some searches-- if for no
other reason then because the number of hits is more managable. For example,
"computer>DRL" turned up almost 400,000 hits in "all domains" but only 40,000
in .edu and only 620 in .gov. Sorry this does not help with this
particular problem but it is a useful option for searching in the future.
Also, one could argue that .gov, .edu and .org websites are not trying to
"sell" something and so any info is presented in a little different light and
perhaps a little lees "spin'.

Good luck

sucks because it doesn't offer anyhing different in 'advanced search' either.

Hello Brandon,
$LDR$ is setup loader rather than NTLDR,
During the initial portions of Setup $LDR$ is loaded. When setup
completes, $LDR$ is supposed to be deleted as in \$win_nt$.~bt and
\$win_nt$.~ls
So during setup the bootsector points to $ldr$ rather than NTLDR
The content of both files would be very similar other than the differences
required for setup.
Thanks,
