LDAP query

Can LDAP be setup to query other domains within a forest?
When I query users in my domain, everything works.
When I query user in a domain that is connected to the forest but I have to
travel up to the root and then to the other domain (AD transitive trust) I
can’t get any answers.
The application that requires this to authenticate users can not use NULL in
their search string, which is what I used to test it with XP Address book
successfully.
