Unless you're Emacs- or VI-inclined, definitely TeXNicCenter:

Personally I use WinEdt, which is also _very_ good, but unfortunately
shareware.

Just for the sake of correctness, LyX is more than a LaTeX editor.
It allows to create LaTeX documents in a more WYSIWYG-like manner,
so you don't have to know specific LaTeX commands to use it.

Downsides are that the LaTeX code it produces are not always very
clear or human-readable, so you lose some of the portability
advantage of TeX/LaTeX especially if you're working together with
other people editing the same document. If you edit the file
outside of LyX, LyX might not be able to open it again afterwards.

It might be more correct to describe LyX as a kind-of-WYSIWYG
editor with LaTeX export capabilities.
