I have a home network, 3 PCs via a router to the Internet. They all can see
the internet
and i can get one way file access from the main PC1 (the one which used to
connect to the Internet prior to the router being used)
to the others. 2 PCs have XP Pro and the 3rd MCE 2005 (XP Pro'ish)

File transfer from the main PC1 to there others is SLOW... like KBs on a
100Meg LAN but file transfer
from PC2 to PC3 it is fast. Neither PC2 or PC3 can get to PC1 files. You get
the standard Access denied ,
you don't have rights message.
The system has the standard config of the router being 192.168.0.1 and the
PCs being from .2 onwards
..1 being the gateway.

I have tried averything under the sun other than a fresh install. An XP SP2
repair, firewall disable, disable antivirus, TCP/IP reset, security reset,
all the action items of
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308007
and
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article64.php

These being 2 comprehensive documents.
Microsoft could save a lot of grieve if they :
a) create comprehensive diagnostic programs
b) isolated the OS into components so it is possible to do a clean install
on just a componet (e.g. networking)

Thanks in advance.

Greg,

I don't know what you've tried, but since I haven't seen you post anything but
this last gasp effort, let's try to diagnose your problem. Provide "browstat
status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start. Read this article,
and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Thanks Chuck

I now have access to all PCs but SLOW. I haven't got through all the tips
yet.

For others : IPv6 stack was the problem, i removed it

At some stage the windows updater prompted me to download this update ...

I found a ref. in here to IPv6 not supporting file sharing

Greg,

That's great news - at least as a start. Slow response could be several things
- but since you're going thru the list, I'll leave you to it. Congrats on
spotting the IPV6 bit. And congrats on concentrating on one fix at a time,
that's the best way to learn what actually works.

I'll look forward to learning what else you find. Patience and persistence are
the key here.

An update

Things OK now, network access is now fast.

Physically removed file sharing from the protocol stack and then rebooted
Then added it back in again. And then re-do the file sharing,

Running through the network wizard or removing and installing without a
reboot did not solve the issue.
