Have you actually looked for menu items like "Options" or "Preferences" in
progs like Word ?

Robert,

In Excel & Word, click on TOOLS - OPTIONS - Click on the "General" tab, and
you will see "Recently used file list" - that number you can make larger or
smaller. This is Word/Excel 2000, but will be very similar in 97 version.

Is there a registry setting that allows over 9 files? I would like to have
25 files available.

It's also the same in Office XP and 2003.

I don't think there is a registry setting where you can manually set the recently used list to more than 9. There also does not appear to be a scroll function built into that drop down menu, which you would need to list 25 items.
