I will soon be getting a larger hard drive to replace my existing one. I
have many, many different programs, settings, and documents on my computer.
It would take weeks to get my system up to where it is now if I started from
scratch. What would be the best way to copy my installation of Windows XP
Pro onto the new drive? The rest of the system will stay the same.

You may wish to visit the support website of the manufacturer of your
new hard drive and see if they have a free utility program that you can use to
accomplish this task. For example, if you have a new Western Digital drive,
you can download their free Data Lifeguard Tools which includes "drive-to-drive
copy capability" (Ref: http://support.wdc.com/download/).

Or you can purchase Norton Ghost and create an "image"
of your old hard drive:

Actually with a new drive, format it then install xp from bootin
to cd (best bet),then use the file transfer wizard install from cd that youv
already created.Obviosly before the hd install,open file-transfer wizard,set compute
as old, then save data in a new folder that youve created, transfer files to folder, the
after,to a cd.It will save all youre settings on xp except xp os files.THe other choice
install/format new hd as slave,go to run after,then type:XCOPY C:\*.* D: \ /c/h/e/k/
D: is the new hd as shown in middle letter,a DOS window opens and transfer all data, agre
to all each time it asks.

I just copied an entire hard drive (27 gb of data) to a new 80 gb
drive using Western Digital's utility.

It worked flawlessly. Both drives were Western Digital.
