how do you split a very large powerpoint presentation into smaller file size
for easier emailing?

First thing I would check is to find out why the file is so big. Here are
some entries from Steve Rindsberg's PPT FAQ on the issue:
Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

Don't do this with PowerPoint. Seriously.

Scanning - Bitmap Resolution - DPI

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?

Give those a read and holler back if your files are still too big.

The other answers will help but if you're just looking for a quick and simple
way to get the job done,

Create as many copies of your presentation as you figure you'll need.
For purposes of argument, let's assume that splitting the presentation into
four parts will take care of the size problem.

Open the first copy, delete all but the first 1/4 of the slides. Save.
Open the second, delete all but the second 1/4 of the slides. Save.
I'll leave you to work out the rest ;-)

Note that unless you've turned off Fast Saves (tools, options) the saved files
may still be too large.
