Hi
When I tyr to start my laptop I get a message that Windows did not start
successfully and a list of options for starting Windows (safe mode, last
known good config, etc.), and then it locks up.
I have got no idea why this has happened.
Thanks for any help

Yup, it doen't matter what option I try to start they all lock up.

I can start recovery console - but I don't have the XP CD that came with
this laptop.

We really don't know why it happened either because you haven't told us
anything about your laptop or answered the First Question Of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

Here's a link that will show you what details to include in your next post:

In the meantime, a quick way to determine if the problem is Windows or
hardware is to boot with a rescue cd such as Knoppix or a Bart's PE. If
the rescue cd doesn't work, then you know you have hardware problems and
can start troubleshooting from there.

for some reason it is no longer locking up - but goes to a blue sreen and
then reboots
I'm getting the error msg STOP: C0000218 so its a corrupt regisrty file.
I checked the KB and it describes how to recover from this, but not on an
OEM system.
Also as I don't know where my XP CD is, I'm beginning to think I may be
screwed
Thanks again for any help

I wouldn't assume that you're screwed. You can still get any data off by
using Knoppix or a Bart's. If you don't have the skill or necessary
equipment, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop. This
will not be your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA. The shop can also
possibly repair your installation without your XP cd because they'll
have numerous "flavors" of XP install cd's to work with.

Since this is a laptop, no matter what you decide to do it would be a
good idea to contact the laptop mftr. and order the restore disks for
your system.

Thanks for help,
I'll have another look for the disc tonight, but I'll probably have to take
it somewhere for repair.
