My Compaq laptop, running XP Professional, has suddenly started asking
for passwords for Admin and Owner accounts before Windows will load.
I never consciously turned this feature on nor did I ever supply
passwords for these accounts. When I try to enter a password, or just
all blanks, the message "The local policy of this system does not
permit you to logon interactively" shows up and back I go to the logon
screen. The computer acted normally before the problem and the only
difference on the logon that started it all, was having the wire to
the college's LAN plugged into the back of the unit. But I have done
that many times before without any problems.
I installed a second XP in a folder called Windows2 on the same
partition and now at least have access to my data and can even run a
few programs from the Windows Explorer screen. But I would love to
reset the old version of the OS and go back to the way things were.
Is there some way to access the password files in the old version of
the OS to render them uneffective or to turn off the password
protection completely?
I tried the recomended fixes on the MS site short of a "clean
installation" of Windows. I want to avoid that for obvious reasons.
For anyone who responds, thanks in advance for your time.
