It's all very well to make that comment - BUT it depends on what the machine is going to be used for.

Laptops are great for business people who are on the go because they can use them on planes and trains. They can be taken to meetings and set up anywhere just by lifting the screen.

Even todays fastest laptop comes nowhere near matching the performance of todays fastest Laptop - and for some people, this is the only reason they refrain from getting one.

From the start, Laptops were never meant to be gaming machines - because of their nature they can't have the fastest graphics and the fastest hard drives and all that kind of thing - even the TFT displays aren't great for gaming. They can not be upgraded easily and are generally more expensive than its desktop equivalent.

That being said, i do like them. You can walk around the house with it - type documents while watching the TV in the lounge, watch DVD's in the car - little things like that you can't do with desktops.

All in all. i would much rather have a desktop system to meet my high standards of computing power BUT - if i could afford it, i would buy a laptop because im sure it would come in handy (plus they look cool)

I have a Desktop at home and a Laptop in the office which does dual duty of being a desktop replacement plus I carry it home and the whole office travels with me to enable me to work at home as well.

I do not prefer one over the other as both are being used for different reasons.

For students the ideal choice as far as I am concerned is a Laptop since they can concentrate on their work at any time and anywhere. I will be getting one for my son later and I may not go for any upgrade of my desktop and do away with it altogether in near future. Gaming on a PC in our house is already abandoned and its the XBox which now rules. Highend laptops are very flexible these days with everything included for desktop replacement.

I currently use an IBM T41 which I acquired in April this year.

My desktop is more than adequate to do anything on it and is self assembled with 2.53 Ghz Intel Processor, 512 MB Corsair Low Latency Ram, 80 GB Western Digital 8 MB cache boot drive, 120GB SATA with 8 MB Cache for Video editing and music. Logitech MX 700 Mouse and Logitech Elite wireless Keyboard, Lacie 8x Dual Format DVD Burner, Asus 16X DVD Rom, Plextor CD-RW and Matrox VGA card. :D

I can't stand games consoles - they are fun when a mate has one and you can play against each other or whatever but if you have a good enough computer i cant justify spending that amount of money to get something which can be done better by a PC - i dont like the controllers either :)

i got both - use my desktop for almost everything as it's faster and has better graphics - laptop used watching dvd, for when my mates come up to the house, or for out the back garden and so on ..

reason i got a laptop was - I was think about gettin a dvd player-but they only have a 5" screen and they cosy about £300(when i got my laptop), so i desicded to get a laptop - much bigger screen for watching DVD's - plus you can do other thing with it

as for the consoles - don't even come close to a pc for gamin - but i would play 1 at my m8's house, and i also don't see the point in spendin move on 1 if u have a good PC - even for the few games that don't come out on PC

my vote - desktop, laptop, consoles

I like laptops, So that i can watch DVD's in the car, and so that i can use the wireless network and use the internet in any room of the house (Evan while i use the loo, though i have NEVER done it!)

Laptops are pointless unless you NEED to do stuff on the move or live in a tiny box (maybe spooky!!). That is the ONLY reason to get them. Desktop PC's are better value, easier to work on and above all more upgradable.

THE END. ;-)

I don't have a laptop, have often thought about getting one, but can't really justify the expense, I don't actually need one so it would just be an expensive toy.

And to quote Quad:

I do not prefer one over the other as both are being used for different reasons.

That's about right.

I use both too, when im at chool i take my laptop, sit in lessons and do everything onto my laptop, then on the bus i can play games and watch dvd's i can take all my work on 1 laptop instead of files and books, i can use thier wireless ADSL to play games against people over the net at dinner time, i can use thier network to play agmes against friends. i can go places and use it in the car, i can take it around a friends and its small and you can set it up almost anywhere i can even take it home plug it into my network and load all of my work onto my desktop,

which brings me to another thing.. my desktop i use for my gaming and anything i do at home like PCReview, internet, i even do all my work an it and put it across the network again before i go back to school. also i mod my desktop PC whih is much easier and i prefer to upgrade it than go inside my celeron :)

overall i think desktops are better only for people that are like me, sits in one room all day and surfs the net and plays games, although just lately with my latop im starting to movearound, so my intel celeron is growing on me.
