I have a Sony Vaio laptop that is quick to boot, but frustratingly
slow to reach the ’ready’ state after logon...takes about 5-6 minutes.
I only have 10 apps in STARTUP entries.
In the Applications Event Viewer the following actions and times are
as follows:
10:25:54 wuauclt (2240). The database engine 5.01.2600.2180 started
10:25:54 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine started a new instance
10:25:56 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine is instituting recovery steps
10:25:57 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine has begun replaying logfile C:\WINDOWS\Software
Distribution\Data Store\Lgs\edb.log
10:26:01 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine has successfully completed recovery steps.
10:31:09 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine stopped the instance (0).
10:31:09 wuaueng.dll (2240). SUS20ClientDataStore: The database
engine stopped.
Obviously something is happening between 10:26 and 10:31!!
The security and system logs are finished at 10:26 and 10:23
respectively.
What could be delaying my system availability and how can I fix it so
that it takes less than 5-6 minutes?

looks like something to do with autoupdates and a corrupted catalogue,
though not sure what... If you don't use automatic updates, try stopping
the service and setting it to manual. see if that sorts it

thanks for the response. I tried starting with automatic updates OFF
but it made no difference.
