I have windows XP Pro installed on my laptop. I would like to re-install it
but there is one application I want to keep that I can no longer find the
software for. It is Visual Studio .NET 2003. I have it registered, but I
have moved to a different state and can not find the software. I know I can
download the express exdition, but I would also like to keep this version.

Can someone give me any information on if this can be done.

Thank you
Dee

REPLY: Your proof of licensure should at least allow a download of
this Visual Studio version from the publisher (Microsoft?). However,
there used to be a utility program from PowerQuest that allowed the
moving of programs from location-to-location within a given machine,
with adjustments to the registry made, but PowerQuest was coopted
(bought) by Symantec, which presumeably either absorbed or canned the
PowerQuest line of products. Maybe check out the Symantec line of
utility applications for possible solutions in lieu of having to
reinstall???

Hi,

Do a repair install, also known as an in-place upgrade. Simply insert the
disk and run setup. From within Windows, choose the in-place upgrade. If
booting from the CD, start setup and at the point where you choose the
installation location choose the existing one, it should offer to repair it.
A repair installation generally preserves data, user accounts, programs, and
settings. It also reverts the installation to the state of the install disk,
meaning that all Windows Updates will need to be redownloaded and
reinstalled.

Why do you want to do this? What do you think it is going to fix?

I want to do this to clean the system after deleting software, clean the
registry, install the express edition which somewhere still has something
that keeps me from installing sql 2005 server express.

Hi Dee,

Ok, but keep in mind that this will not clean up bits of software leftover
from removing applications. For that, the best tools are the ones
distributed by the software vendors specific to the program.

Is it possible to do a back up from the accessaries, system tools and back
the application I want to save to a CD, re-install windows and then replace
it?

Dee

Hi Dee,

No, the application needs to be installed as only installing will create
needed registry entries and place files in the system folders. Without them,
the application will not function correctly, if at all.

Can I transfer it to my desktop or do I just lose Visual Studio 2003 in order
to get my laptop running better and in order in install the express edition?

Thanks
Dee
