Yeah I have problems booting off the floppy and CD drive.
How can I restore the XP bootsector?

I have tried booting the machine with both Winxp cd and a floppy disk
but nothing.
Something I onloy just noticed is at power on, all the lights flash
eg, CD drive, PCMCIA, basically all the operation status lights excep
the Hard Disk light which makes me think there is something wron
there.

Thanks for your help so far, any more guidance is welcome.

You really have to fix up your hardware first before attempting
to fix your operating system problems. Trying to do it the other
way round is wasting your time.

You could try to get into your BIOS setup and change the boot sequence.
Many laptops go to the BIOS setup by pressing <delete> or <F2> or
something during initial power up. The fact that you can't boot to a
floppy indicates something more serious than a messed up boot sector.

Make sure the boot sequence is CD then floppy then hard drive. Or floppy
then CD then hard drive would be OK. If hard drive is first in the
sequence and something is wrong with the HD, nothing will work.
