laptop keeps wanting to repair vista

I have an acer with windows vista premium and when its starting up it has 2
lines top one says repair vista and the one underneath says 'start windows
normally' we are just selecting that one for the moment because the repair
one doesn't seem to work. Everything starts up and it goes into windows the
desktop Internet and mail the only thing that seems to not be opening up is
control panel it just hangs.

Any ideas please?

Boot off your Windows Vista DVD, boot into Windows Recovery Environment,
select the System Recovery Options > Choose Repair > select your Operating
System you want to Repair > and click the Startup Repair link.

Thanks - that's my first hurdle Acer never supplied a vista DVD with the
laptop just pre-loaded with a program to make a full recovery (which formats
the whole drive I think!) great!

Psst! Andy! Don't let the Vista fanboys here get wind (of which they
have plenty) of your complaints of Vista. They will say its all in your
head or that u screwed it up yourself. sigh. good luck!

Try System Restore:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Select a Date/Time before this started.

Assuming you are still in warranty contact Acer.
You may be right, some OEMs give few if any options when using their
restore media.
Check your manual carefully before contacting Acer.

Thanks all a system restore (in Vista) cured the problem today took ages to
complete but all is working now it seems.

I am not normally a fan of system restore in ME XP & Vista and normally have
turned it off in the past but in this case I am glad I left it enabled.

Glad to hear SR worked.

You said "pre-loaded with a program".
I take that to mean you have a hidden partition for restoring the
computer and no media?
If so, you should make/order the media.
Most computers shipping without media have an option to create your
own restore media.
Others you need to order and pay around $20 for the media.
Whichever is the option, you should since you will probably need the
media at some point in time.

On possible reason is a catastrophic hard drive failure which takes
the partition with it.
If the computer is out of warranty, your cheap and easy fixes are
nonexistent.

Sooner or later you will need the media.

Yes, I used to like the option Dell were offering when you bought a PC or
Notebook with XP they would offer the XP installation CD ROM for an extra
6.50 Euro extremely good value and well worth getting with the new PC. -
However they don't seem to offer that facility with Vista on their PCs now
when you order an new PC with them now.


This Acer laptop came with a partition which you could recover Vista but it
formatted and put the laptop back to when it left the factory no incremental
restore leaving your documents and programs intact alas) but last time I
used the partition once it would not Activate using the sticker (25 digit
code) under the laptop but luckily I had made a DVD ROM when the laptop was
new through a special program to make a recovery disc and that one activated
OK using the number - but again it formatted and wiped everything off.
Compaq PC's (and most probably some other makes) used to give you the choice
to wipe the hard drive and restore or just replace windows and leave your
other programs and files intact and that I think was a much better way to go
and they should all do that it would make life easier.
