Laptop goes into standby and disconnects from internet

Whenever i close the lid of my laptop it goes into standby. Whenever I open the lid back up and sign in under my username and pass., i can see that my computer has disconnected from the internet. I know this b/c before i close the lid i'm downloading, but when i open it up, the download has been stopped. Is there an option for staying connected to the internet when your computer goes into standby?
 
And just what do you think standby is?

Look at the power options and set the options to stay ON
with the lid closed, also set the monitor to save power, but
leave the computer running and the hard drive to no
shutdown.
