My Laptop is connected directly through a network to my PC. My PC has it's
dialup shared. During the start of my Latop, it dials automatically,
although I have the setting on my PC to never dial a connection.
All the auto updates on my Laptop is turned off.

Please advice.

I seem to recall a setting in the search bar for doing internet searches automatically,
I'm not at an XP machine at the moment to confirm but you may want to look in there.

yes thats how it works, somewhere in the search options there is a setting to stop that. I'll try
and get to an XP machine later.

Try downloading tweaui for XP from the MS website it may be configurable from there

I have Tweak UI, but couldn't find that setting - on the other hand I do
not know what to disable. Your help will be very helpfull.

Hi Deon,

Switch to Classic Search.

Search Assistant will try to connect to http://sa.windows.com This is done
to check for updates to its features, tips, wording and etc. Not allowing
access can cause its own set of problems, usually a "A file that is
required........." error message.

You can stop the internet access by changing the search behavior to Classic
Search.

Disable Search Assistant (Line 15)

Old Style Search Engine On/Off (Line 49)

Or...

Use TweakUI, Explorer section to set Classic Search:
